Solar Striker
I did not own or play this game as a kid, but it's definitely among my favorite games now!
The artwork is not quite as detailed and beautiful as in other shooters like R-Type or Nemesis, but the fast-paced action and tight controls make up for it.
Also, the vertical scrolling makes it stand out from the crowd of horizontal shooters.
